Silverware - "I always get what I want"

Silverware’s new album No Plans is another great record born out of San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone Studios. There’s something special about the music that’s made there. It sounds alive, warm, and vibrant, reflecting the richness and intimacy of the setting. Ainsley Wagoner’s music is a perfect fit and representative of the mind of seasoned, experimental artist that thrives in that kind of studio setting. Wagoner has been releasing music for a decade as Silverware, and the songs on No Plans stand tall and upright with a strong sense of self and maturity that’s reflective of that experience, as they seamlessly interweave the lush sounds of dream pop, indie folk, and art-pop, while adhering to a guiding narrative that strings them all together. One of my favorite tracks from the album is its final single, “I always get what I want,” which nicely represents the album’s overarching maximalism that wades in the sonic pools of several of the aforementioned stylistic descriptors.

“I always get what I want” seems sparse, yet that’s what makes it sound so big. The song starts off with some  slinky synths, a light hi-hat and kick drum, and Wagoner’s breathless vocals, as she ruminates on the profound realities of depression and isolation. Her words pinpoint those scenarios that should invite feelings of happiness like being in a room full of friends or basking in the warmth of sunlight, but instead invoke a desire to shut-in. Her voice morphs at times and allows her to showcase her impressive range, as she reaches some great heights in the chorus, particularly when she deconstructs the title in quick succession, “always get what I want,” followed by “always what I want.”

I always get what I want” appears on Silverware’s brand new record, No Plans, which is out now. You can purchase it via Bandcamp or stream it on your platform of choice. Keep up with Silverware by following them on Instagram.
