Ashley & Justin - “Look Outside Your Window”
The husband and wife duo of Ashley and Justin Morey are well known around these parts for their lovely tunes as pop outfit Sunshine and the Rain, and now, they’re embarking on a new musical journey together as Ashley & Justin. Their first single, “Look Outside Your Window,” arrived last week just in time for spring, and it aims to supplement that rush of warm weather-induced cheer that tends to set in around this time of year. The retro-sounding garage-psych track intertwines some trippy guitar riffs with a far-out Farfisa organ, as Ashley’s saccharine vocals, which describe a deep attraction, pierce through the fuzzy instrumental swirl. It’s a dynamic and textured listening experience driven by a woozy psych-pop melody and blissful harmonies in the choruses that sound sweetly nostalgic.
Justin originally conceived the song as his debut solo single, but a couple of chance occurrences in the studio led to a change in plans. He shared the following background with us via e-mail:
It’s funny, this song almost never came together. Initially, it was going to be my debut solo single. I had spent a great deal of time recording all of the music to tape with Dennis Pierce behind the board. We completed Den’s guitar Telecaster track and moved on to vocals. But for some strange reason, I couldn’t perform what I was hearing in my head. Ash and I would sing this song over and in our apartment (our neighbors were probably psyched ). I always loved the way Ash’s voice sounded when she would sing the lead. The next session I conned her into singing the lead as a “vocal guide” for my actual take. She sang it in one shot and during playback, it became obvious that I wouldn’t be re-cutting the lead with my own vocal. It was a beautifully genuine moment.
