LAPÊCHE - “Oliver”

LAPÊCHE returned in dramatic fashion last week with the first offering from their next full length, a dynamic and driving track called “Oliver.” Over their first five years as a band, the quintet has established themselves as a legitimate musical force thanks to their fresh take on the kind of melodic post-hardcore that thrived in underground circles two decades ago, and their latest single sees them further refining their signature sound.  On “Oliver,” the Brooklyn band combines elements of dark and light, pairing more serious lyrical themes with an uplifting melody and a flowing rhythm. In this way, it’s a bit different from the songs on their last EP, Spirit Bunnies, which are somber in both tone and lyrical content.

“Oliver” starts with two quick bursts of guitars before a swift “woo” and a sliding bass note kick the song into full gear. The track chugs right along with wiry, tense guitars and a rhythm section that makes its presence known, as frontperson Krista Diem’s piercing lyrics confront the pain of losing a wanted pregnancy, particularly in the wordplay heavy chorus: “half baked, half right, half sick, half-light, half-closed, half cry, half yours and half mine.” If you’ve seen the band play live, you know they operate like a well-oiled machine in that setting, and the magic touch of J. Robbins’ production only further bolsters their tight sound, as “Oliver” sounds crisp, with each element flowing perfectly in its right place. The song ends with an exclamation point, as the rest of the band joins Diem for the final chorus, providing some sing-along inducing, shout-along-styled harmonies that’ll make you want to smash that back button for another listen.
