Tetchy - "Backyard"
Brooklyn’s Tetchy roared back into action last week with a new song called “Backyard,” their first release since the band’s powerful 2020 debut EP, Hounds. On that EP, the band pulled no punches when it came to their devastating brand of songwriting, stringing together five tracks that were united in their multifaceted heaviness. Building their songs of an aggressive and caustic sonic foundation, the band also paid serious mind to the scowling emotional tenor of their lyrical focus, expounding on the mentally taxing experiences of loss and other significant traumas with little restraint. As a follow-up, “Backyard” gives fans of this up-and-coming quartet’s heart on-your sleeve style more of what they want and then some.
From what I’ve come to know about Tetchy based on their small, but growing catalog, they like to shift the mood significantly within the boundaries of a song. Their songs ebb and flow in intensity, scaling enormous peaks and descending into deep valleys. They draw out that play to a T on “Backyard,” with frontperson Maggie Denning vocals morphing in intensity from whisper-like to a blood-curdling scream. The band joins in as well, as the guitars, bass, and drums all slowly, but surely crescendo into a furious storm of cymbal crashes and distortion.
