The Johns - "Forge"

The Johns - "Forge"

The Johns blew me away last year with their single “Blood Run Free” and the very, very bloody accompanying video. The Bushwick based “garage tropicália” band showed no reservations when it came to exploring their darkest inclinations. The video, which was produced by New York-based video and performance artist Erica Schreiner, explores life, death, and murder in a captivating stop motion animation style. After releasing another single entitled “La Vecinita” late last year, The Johns are back with a proper LP called Forge that expands on their hybrid sound of anti-folk, Caribbean grooves, and garage rock.

“Forge,” the EP’s title track, showcases frontman John Dydo’s unique brand of poetic lyricism, adding an intensely personal layer of confessional tenderness to the song. His voice immediately stands out, as Dydo sings with a monotone croon in the style of David Berman that’s accentuated by his soft, lulling guitar work. Some silky sounding backing vocals along with a calypso beat are introduced later in the song, injecting the band’s characteristic Caribbean influences. Overall, “Forge” is a relaxing listen with soothing rhythms and a beach-y vibe that showcases The Johns’ unique sound. To hear more, check out the entire LP on your streaming service of choice or via Bandcamp. The band is also selling vinyl copies!
