Aubrey Haddard - "Sweeter The Honey"

Aubrey Haddard’s second release of 2020, “Sweeter The Honey,” is beaming with soul and raw power.  The Brooklyn-based songwriter has a distinguished set of pipes, and she knows very well that her voice is her greatest musical asset. It’s rousing and profound, leaving its mark on all aspects of the song, whether it’s the alluring verses or the attention-grabbing choruses. While Haddard’s vocals may be the defining characteristic of the song and the key ingredient to its distinct flavor, there’s a lot of other notable elements to digest, like a sweet and steadily melodic bass line, a nimble guitar solo at the halfway mark, and the more fleshed out, bursting arrangements that really hammer home the final refrain. “Sweeter The Honey” digs into a funky groove early on that doesn’t let up, making it a catchy, powerful, and straight-up excellent tune. Lyrically, Haddard described the song as a “testament to female resilience and its double-edged sword,” which is perfectly embodied in the song’s anchoring line, “sweeter the honey, stronger the sting,” which will undoubtedly be stuck in your head after just one listen.

Via e-mail, Haddard shared how the song originated while she sought refuge in a beautiful part of the world:

We finished writing Sweeter in the south of France in a little village during a short, incredible artist residency. It was a much needed escape from the impending midterm elections of 2018 and although everything around us was truly picturesque, I'd carried my uneasiness overseas and was figuring out how to sit with it. At face value, Sweeter is a feel good bop, but within the lyrics is this unsettling feeling that I'm often met with in times like these.

Haddard also shared a visually compelling video for the track, which you can stream below.
