Majorette - "Old Enough To Know Better"
Danielle Salomon has a fondness for nostalgia. Though her debut solo single, “Ghosts & Angels,” lamented negativity, with Salomon yearning for “a moment” where things would all make sense, it also prominently featured the kind of ringing, open chord guitar strumming that’s quintessential daydream fuel. Salomon is now carrying those musical sentiments over to her latest effort, effectively pairing them with some wistful thematic content and a grainy, Super 8 music video.
Her second single, “Old Enough to Know Better,” which Salomon is releasing under a new moniker, Majorette, is both sweet and teeming with the kind of warm feelings that accompany the process of engaging in some personal revisionist history. Opening with the sound of skates cutting through a fresh sheet of ice (which funny enough, sounds quite similar to the surface noise of a needle dropping onto a scratchy old vinyl record), the track then seamlessly transitions into a mosaic of bright and reflective instrumentation. Against a backdrop of sunny guitars, xylophone, and other nice touches of auxiliary percussion, Salomon sings of how time tends to heal wounds, describing how negative experiences can sometimes transform into more pleasant memories with the passage of time.
The video, which was shot and directed by Michael Madrid, captures Salomon gleefully figure skating, something she describes as one of her “childhood passions.” Shot entirely on grainy Super 8 video, the cool video definitely mirrors the reflective vibe of the music and lyrics in “Old Enough to Know Better.”
