Jon The Guilt - "Gold"
We’re excited to premiere “Gold,” the latest single from New York City’s Jon The Guilt. His first release of 2021 follows a series of great and diverse tracks from last year that ran the gamut stylistically from heartfelt folk-pop ballads to groovy Spoon-like indie rock, and honestly, even some interesting stuff in between - like a ripping Christmas tune and some angular sounding post-punk. He’s emerged from the isolating circumstances of the last year with an incredible batch of new tunes, and “Gold” is a kaleidoscopic first taste of what he has in store.
“Gold” opens with interwoven jangly guitars and futuristic sounding synths before a firm bassline guides the track to its emotive verses, where Jon The Guilt sifts through the give and take of a relationship, as he sings, “something’s missing but I don’t know. You know I love you, but I feel alone.” Sonically, the song once again displays Jon The Guilt’s propensity for melding different influences in a highly complementary way. This number in particular sounds like a super sweet mix of ELO, Tom Petty, and Dinosaur Jr. The latter reference really pushes its way to the forefront during the song’s final minute, where Jon The Guilt lets out an absolutely massive riff of epic proportions. J Mascis would be proud.
