chickpee - "two trees"
We’re excited to premiere the video for “two trees'' from Philadelphia’s chickpee. The solo project of multi-instrumentalist and Italian native Chiara D’Anzieri hones in on a warm, 60s pop sound on their latest single, utilizing swooning vocals, twinkling keys, and crying guitars to create a track that oozes a kind of melancholic nostalgia both sonically and lyrically. The song’s inviting vintage synth tones, mixed with D’Anzieri’s glowing harmonies, recall a cross between a girl group ballad and something you’d hear in an expansive Ennio Morricone film score, while the lyrics fondly reflect on the love story of her parents. Her words serve as a tribute to them, and begin as if she’s penning a letter of deep gratitude with the words, “dear you, best parents I could ask for.” Since D’Azieri’s parents live in her home country of Italy, she has not been able to see them in over a year due to the pandemic, and thus, wanted to use the song as a way to “celebrate my parents' love and the incredible example they’ve been for me” in spite of their physical distance. The track also features contributions from drummer Dominic Billett, and some nice, light flourishes of marimba courtesy of Eric Slick.
The accompanying video takes place in a very wintry-looking forest of bare trees and nicely captures the song’s yearning nature. With the ground blanketed in snow, D’Azieri wanders through a winter wonderland, reflecting on cherished memories and pensively gazing into the vast woodland. The video was filmed by her partner Ron Gallo, and it has a very nostalgic sheen to it that makes it feel like it was shot on vintage analog film.

“Two Trees” will appear on chickpea’s forthcoming debut album, IMPORTED, which will be out later this year. The album was written in real-time about D’Anzieri’s experience leaving her home country of Italy for the first time to move across the world, navigating the U.S. immigration process and loss of freedom and existential crisis all in the name of love. You can also stream “Two Trees” on your platform of choice, including Spotify. Keep up with chickpee on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
