Harpooner - "You're My Best Friend"
We’re excited to premiere “You’re My Best Friend,” the radiant new single from Nashville’s Harpooner. It’s the second single of 2021 from the project of songwriter Scott Schmadeke, following the January release of the beautifully intricate “Everybody Likes You.” On “You’re My Best Friend” Schmadeke similarly crafts a deftly arranged slice of chamber pop gold, complete with layers upon layers of gorgeous sonic textures and buoyant lyrics.
Schmadeke describes “You’re My Best Friend” as a song inspired by the optimism and lightheartedness of children, a sentiment that definitely rings true through its thematic subject matter and instrumentation. Schmadeke assumes the perspective of a carefree child in the verses, and his voice gently glides as he sings about gazing at clouds, playing in the grass, hopping like bunnies, and counting the rings on oak trees. He surrounds his words with some sprightly piano playing and punchy strings, a bright soundtrack that nicely accompanies the youthful curiosity that he describes. The saccharine chorus, which beams thanks to its lush harmonies, lands like a deep sigh of pure bliss, as Schmadeke repeats, “you’re my best friend.” The string section swells towards the end, and he further bolsters the rhythm with some supplemental elements of percussion, effectively projecting one final ray of warm sunshine out into the world through the song.
