Wormburner - "Restless Nation"
Wormburner’s brand new single “Restless Nation” is a not so subtle song for our currently exasperating times. The moment we’re currently living in doesn’t really require much nuance, so the veteran quintet wastes no time getting right to the point. The brutal truth is that we’re in the middle of an unprecedented time of disease and societal unrest that’s forever altered our way of life.
Consistent with this harsh reality, frontman Steve "Hank" Henry sings starkly with a combination of budding frustration and straight-up anger, conceding that we’re collectively restless due to lockdowns, racial injustice, and the unprecedented amount of division that exists in America. He particularly speaks of the ubiquitous anxiety renting space in our heads due to the current global pandemic and its unrelenting, indiscriminate nature, singing “I got a message from my brother, he says, you heard it first, you heard it here. He says for all the bloods been bled, there’s blood still to bleed. And it won’t be bound by color, class, or creed.” The song is a mid-tempo stomper that sounds crisp and hones in on its anthemic guitar melody that eventually morphs into a righteous Springsteen-esque solo at the end. Henry’s slightly nasal voice projects a lingering uncertainty about the future as the track comes to a close, mirroring the circumstances that we find ourselves in right now.
Via e-mail, Henry described how the song evolved over the course of the last year:
“This song began in the Springtime as a commentary on the pandemic lockdowns. Then as the lyrics were being written, it seemed like the whole conversation around the country turned toward the fight for racial justice. Restlessness continued all summer long, with an incredibly high-stakes presidential election looming in the Fall and a lot of distrust being sown about the voting process and what the results will really mean. We recorded this all remotely, in true pandemic fashion, sending tracks back and forth between New York City, New Jersey and even Colorado."
