Cathedral Ceilings - "Thanks For The Guitar, Mommy"
If you’re in the mood for pure, unadulterated punk rock packed with just the right amount of pop sensibilities, then look no further than Thanks For The Guitar, Mommy, the brand new double single from Cathedral Ceilings. The trio may be new, but they’re made up of three pedigreed Garden State music veterans: Ralph Malanga (Stuyvesant) on guitar and vocals, Nick D’amore (Overlake, Mr. Payday) on drums, and Tom Tom DiEllo (Mr. Payday) on bass. They certainly pooled their talents on this release as the two songs, “Bonfire of the Manatees” and “Crème brûlée,” may be the catchiest tunes I’ve heard all year.
The two songs clock in at under three minutes combined, but their brevity and immediacy are key parts of their strengths. They both hone in on the kind of infectious and melodic guitar hooks that are unrelenting and fast, allowing each song’s catchy riffs and rhythms to fester. “Bonfire of Manatees” starts with a brief fuzzy strum before progressing to a barrage of drums, guitars, and wailing vocals. “Crème brûlée” is an anthem for ditching the grueling work of the service industry, and you can certainly feel the glee in Malanga’s voice across the track’s short runtime. The cathartic track features some similarly ferocious guitars and a propulsive rhythm that pair perfectly with its lyrical content, which is definitely relatable for anyone who’s ever had a shitty job.
