Don Lifted - "Lost in Orion"
“Lost In Orion,” the new single from Don Lifted, is a complex look at the multi-faceted nature of identity and the factors that shape it. Simultaneously, Lawrence Matthews, the multi-disciplinary artist behind the project, artfully blends several musical styles to supplement his contagious flow and thought-provoking lyricism. His words are backed by tremulous guitars that anchor the track’s ambient sonic spectrum, a soft beat that gives way for some of Matthews’ more emphatic lines, and flowing synths that help round out its dream-like feel. It’s a wonderful blend of gently melodic indie rock, hip-hop, and ambient music. In “Lost In Orion,” Matthews explores the current social climate and how the weight of George Floyd’s murder intersects with his desire to be more open about his sexuality, and ultimately, how that may impact how he’s treated by others. It’s a song with a ton of nuance both sonically and thematically with much to unpack and digest.
The accompanying video adds significant depth to the already powerful track and showcases Matthews’ keen ability to visualize the sentiments expressed through his lyrics. The cinematic piece juxtaposes gripping reflections of Southern history with images that capture Matthews’ own fluid sexuality. It’s a must-watch and really brings the song to life, so check it out below.
