According to musician Mark Fernyhough, it’s boiling in Berlin right now.  That may or may not be a direct result of his latest single, “Waves,” a fierce and searing post-punk anthem that attempts to make sense of our highly polarized and distressing times. His recent output hasn’t shied away from the political - “Divided Cities” referenced the fraught history of his city of residence in the context of Brexit and “Corona (Song For A Virus) delved into our strange current reality, but “Waves” may hit the hardest.  His commentary on our fractured world pierces through droning synths and some raw guitar power, as his words advocate for change: “Can’t you see the stakes have changed / Roar of the waves.” Fernyhough’s voice resonates through the song’s dark instrumentation for a dynamic that’s simultaneously chilling and inspiring. Fernyhough also shared an equally dark and compelling video to go along with the song, which captures him and drummer Agata D’mon performing in a barren field on the outskirts of Berlin and weaves in scenes of masked individuals and lyrics from the song. Check it out below.

You can purchase “Waves” via Bandcamp. It comes with a special B-side called “Broken Statues.” You can also listen to the song on Spotify. Keep up with Mark by following him on Instagram.
