CR and the Nones - "Judgement Day"
Words by Andrew Merclean
Dark clouds are on the horizon. Hands sweat and shake in anticipation of a long-looming confrontation. And that damn knot in your throat just won’t fuck off. Yep- make no mistake, it’s Judgment Day. But there’s no need to be nervous. Songwriter Chris Gennone’s new music video shows us how to walk tough through the bullshit. Cue the vid:
Directed by Joe Evans, “Judgment Day” offers us a glimpse of CR’s Kerouacian day-to-day. From brushing his teeth in his car to crunching through New Jersey’s November streets, these images speak more of resilience than poverty. Soundtracking the action, arpeggiated guitars chirp and chime while the acoustic-heavy beat rattles and drives. The soulful refrain “I promise I’ll make it to you someday” is poignantly matched against images of him squinting on the interstate. What is he driving towards? Will he make it?
Holding his guitar and fumbling with the doorknob, Gennone isn’t greeted with yet another problem. Instead, he is bear-hugged by local celebrity Pete Egan. The remaining frames are filled with toasts, goofs and a framed portrait of Neil Young. This is what is REALLY waiting for us when shit goes South.
“Judgement Day” is CR’s first song since 2018’s excellent Coming of Age. It precedes the excellent LP Living in Fear, which will be released in November. Mixed by Jeff Zeigler (the War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, Mary Lattimore,) it is a landmark release and reinvention for this prolific songwriter.
Listen to “Judgement Day” on your streaming platform of choice, including Spotify. You can also purchase the track via Bandcamp. Stay tuned, as pre-orders for Living In Fear will be announced soon! The album will be out this November on limited edition cassette via Favorite Friend Records.
