Yella Belly - "Baby Please" b/w "Lo Down"
Our favorite alt-country stunners Yella Belly are back with another pair of excellent tunes, “Baby Please” and “Low Down.” I’m a big fan of these types of two song releases - what Yella Belly describes as a “Double A-side single.” I like calling it a digital 7-inch single, as you’re getting to hear two tracks from the same artist that are distinct, but still complement each other well. It’s the modern-day equivalent of flipping a 45 rpm record on your turntable.
These two new songs once again nicely blend frontman Will Thompson’s New York attitude with his Texas roots. Both are alt-country jams with a rough and tumble edge that can only be cultivated in the city that never sleeps. Thompson conveys a powerful emotional fragility on “Baby Please,” as he spills his guts through some roaring vocals and thunderous guitars. The southern flair definitely emerges in the chorus, particularly as Thompson sings “Baby please come back to me” with some serious soul. “Lo Down” shifts the focus from a lovesick plea to tackling those hard times with an aching, more slowed-down blues sound. Sonically, they sound different, but both have that yearning vibe that Thompson conveys so well. The band recorded and produced these songs themselves and enlisted Eli Crews to mix them at Spillway Sound in the Catskills.
You can purchase “Baby Please” b/w “Lo Down” via Bandcamp. The songs are also available on all streaming platforms, including Spotify. Keep up with Yella Belly by following them on Instagram and liking them on Facebook.
