Daydream Review - "Blossom"

Daydream Review - "Blossom"

Words by Zach Romano.

“Blossom,” the new single from Chicago psych-rock artist Daydream Review, is an early contender for the Look At My Records! song of the summer. The vibe “Blossom” gives off fits the season, and it’s the perfect song to put over the Bluetooth speaker you shoved in your bag before your much-delayed but now nearly plausible first trip to Rockaway this year.

Daydream Review has shared bills with bands like Triptides and Sugar Candy Mountain, and their sound is very much of the neo-psych movement that those bands came out of. “Blossom” opens with a wash of organ, and it isn’t long before a spacy guitar and an ear-tickling ride cymbal pick up the groove. The bass is the real star here, as it carries the melody and provides just a slight touch of dissonance that keeps the listener engaged. Along with organ, bass as a melodic instrument seems to be a hallmark of music in this space, and for that, we owe thanks to Kevin Parker.

Check out “Blossom” on here, and if you can’t wait for that trip to the beach, put it on repeat while looking out an open window while sipping a beer and remembering what barbecues were like. You can also peruse the band’s back catalog on Bandcamp.
