Groupie - "Thick As Glue"
Groupie are finishing the year on a raucous note with the release of their new song, “Thick As Glue.” The track is the latest in a strong string of tunes that the band shared during this tumultuous 2020. Here at Look At My Records!, we couldn’t get enough of the powerful “Half Wave” and their Polish-language epic “Daleko,” both of which remained in our regular rotation for most of the year. After only a few listens, we’re now making some room for “Thick As Glue.”
The song is definitely rough around the edges in just the right ways, starting out with some muffled guitars that quickly morph into a mixture of serrated and fuzzy, before detouring to a dreamy swirl of reverb. The song’s matter-of-fact vocals are a perfect match for its sonic attitude, as the band converses with their younger selves about the naïveté of hero worship. Specifically, the lyrics confront the coming of age realization that the rock idols from your youth aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. In realizing their flaws and humanity, Groupie asks themselves, and the next generation of musicians, “who do you think you’re looking up to?”
“Thick As Glue” is the third single from the band’s forthcoming debut full-length, Ephemeral, which is set for release on January 22nd. You can pre-order it on limited edition purple fruit punch vinyl via Bandcamp. “Thick As Glue” is also available to stream on Spotify.
