Sleepers Union Announce New Album "Numbers Station," Share Video For Lead Single "Now You Know"
Jersey City indie rockers Sleepers Union are prepping for the Thursday release of their debut record, Numbers Station. The band, which was originally formed by guitarist Mark Anderson in his home country of New Zealand, took on a new form when he relocated to the states a few years ago. With the permission of his Kiwi bandmates, Anderson recruited Gabe Perry (guitar, vocals), Matt Poppe (bass, vocals), and Todd Campisi (drums) for an American version of the lineup, and the quartet has been gigging steadily around these parts ever since. Now, the band is sharing the album’s lead single, “Now You Know,” and a cool black and white video to accompany it.
“Now You Know” is rockin’ and melodic with a very hooky anchoring riff that brings the song to life. The band channels a chugging and scrappy classic indie rock sound with just a little bit of jangle that pierces through during the choruses. With a surging, straight-away rhythm and a steady beat, it’s a number that’s sure to please lovers of Superchunk, Bob Mould, and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists.
The video captures the band in their element - playing live in a couple of different settings. In addition to some footage of the band playing in local sound engineer Corey Zack’s The Cocoon studio, the video also features shots of their performance earlier this year at Harsimus Cemetery in Jersey City, and of the band hanging out and having fun on the street.
Numbers Station features several rocking tunes that build off of the frenetic energy of “Now You Know,” including “Concorde,” “Made Of Stars,” and “Circles,” but the band also works in a nice amount of variety while still maintaining a cohesive sounding collection of songs. The record also features a down-tempo, almost Ramone-esque sounding ballad called “Into You,” and “Machines,” a song that definitely draws influence from some of Anderson’s countrymen like The Bats and The Clean. If you enjoy indie rock and its many sub-genres, then you’ll definitely find something to enjoy amongst the songs on Numbers Station.
