Crybaby Claire - “Blue”
Namra Beatrix Saleem has graced the digital pages of this here blog several times over the years as one half of the Norwegian duo FLTY BRGR GRL. That saccharine-sounding project came to life during the pandemic and fused the sugary melodies of 60s girl groups with lo-fi aesthetics and lovestruck lyrical themes. This year saw Saleem launch her own solo project in Crybaby Claire, a more ambient-sounding project focused on crafting atmospheric, beat-driven soundscapes that are melancholic and danceable. Saleem recently shared the project’s debut EP, You Should All Be Crying, which features the standout single titled “Blue.”
Like the themes and lyrics heard on FLTY BRGR GRL’s music, “Blue” is intimate and focused on love and love-adjacent yearning. It has the feel of an electro-bedroom pop confessional, one where Saleem sings of a longing feeling for attention and affection against the backdrop of a minimalist backing beat and New Order-styled synthesizers. If you’re a fan of the darker side of 80s synthpop, then you’ll definitely enjoy what Crybaby Claire has to offer.
