Gavin Turek - “IOU”

If you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you may think my tastes are limited to Gen X indie rock and anything with Byrds-ian sounding guitar hooks. That’s simply not the case, though. In recent years, I’ve taken to disco, funk, and soul, both old and new. Gavin Tourek’s 2015 7-inch single “Good Look For You” b/w somehow found its way into my 45 bin and it regularly works its way into my DJ sets. Since then, Turek’s released a bevy of singles, remixes, and a solid full-length titled MADAME GOLD. Her second full-length, Diva of the People, just dropped and it’s full of more dance floor bangers, including the single “IOU.”

"IOU" is a captivating blend of retro-futuristic pop and heartfelt emotional expression. The track opens with a smooth, pulsing synth that immediately sets the stage for an intoxicating dance rhythm. Turek’s vocals glide over the production with a polished ease, effortlessly moving between breathy intimacy and bold, declarative notes. The song’s lyrics—a bittersweet acknowledgment of love and its complexities—are delivered with a raw sincerity, giving the track both emotional depth and resonance.

"IOU" recalls the best of ‘80s synth-pop and disco, but with a distinct flair that’s uniquely Turek. The production is rich and textured, layering shimmering synths over a steady bassline that propels the track forward, creating a sense of urgency and yearning. The chorus is particularly infectious, with Turek’s vocal hooks lingering long after the song has ended.
