Elk City - “Tried To Move On”

Elk City - “Tried To Move On”

Montclair New Jersey’s Elk City released their sixth album, Above The Water, in October of last year, and it looks like they’re wasting no time in readying LP seven, Undertow, for the world. They shared the record’s lead single, “Strong (You’re Not Alone),” in July. The epic track explored themes of obsession and fixation within the context of cults and alternative lifestyles, a topic that the quintet continues to probe on their latest release, “Tried To Move On.”

“Tried To Move On” is a poppier contrast to the billowing, psychedelic folk stylings of “Strong (You’re Not Alone).” Featuring a bright chorus, a brisk, meandering bass line, and front person Renee LoBue’s distinctive and powerful vocal charm, “Tried To Move On” peers into the psyche of someone caught up in the allure of a cult figure and the vice-like grip they hold on their followers. The song peaks with a Feelies-esque, twin-guitar centered instrumental breakdown that’s accentuated by a buoyant string section.
