Rachel Angel - “Closer to Myself”
Songwriter Rachel Angel has bounced around the globe over the last few years. We first discovered her twangy and affecting folk music while she was still living in Brooklyn, but since then, she returned to her hometown of Miami for a spell and has spent the last year living in Spain. Prior to her jaunt across the Atlantic, she wrote and recorded her forthcoming debut full-length, Midnite Heart Attack, which drops this Friday, September 9th. Angel recently shared a compelling video for the album’s second single, “Closer To Myself,” a transformational tune that sees Angel exploring new territory in more ways than one.
Angel’s prior output has been characterized by its gorgeously gentle, country-tinged introspection, but in contrast, “Closer To Myself” feels bright and lively, while still turning the focus inward lyrically. The song’s more spirited instrumentation seems to stem from the hope that flows from freeing yourself of toxicity in both habits and relationships, and in the process, getting more acquainted with your true self. Against a rollicking and full sounding sonic bank drop, Angel chronicles the journey: “Roll around in circles feeling lost. Got stuck in the britches on a cross. Ring around the rosie, paint me true.I’m getting closer to myself, And less to you. And when I finally close my eyes and see, I find that it was always in front of me.”
