Elk City - “Your Time Doesn’t Exist”
Elk City doesn’t shy away from making their guitars jingle and jangle on their brand new single “Your Time Doesn’t Exist.” So, if you’re a follower of this little here blog, you won’t be surprised that it’s our Song of the Week! The veteran Montclair-based quintet’s sound on their latest release features some bright, autumnal guitar work in a way that’s reminiscent of New Jersey indie rock legends like The Feelies and Yo La Tengo.
“Your Time Doesn’t Exist” is Feelies-esque in all the best ways, as Elk City draws on some of the sonic touchstones from that legendary band’s mid-period records. The tempo is tranquil at the outset, but the song pensively gains steam, peaking at the shimmering intersection of acoustic and electric guitars, which up the energy levels just slightly. Vocalist Renée LoBue’s distinct and captivating voice is quite present and clear, and her ruminations on the fickle constructs of time pair perfectly with the song’s laid-back sonic foundation. The outro is another shining, Feelies-like moment, as LoBue softly harmonizes the track’s titular phrase with her bandmate while the surrounding instrumentation slowly fades.
