JessX - "Scream"
JessX’s new single, “Scream,” does an incredible job of capturing the emotions and feelings that precede and follow letting out a gratifying shriek. The experience is a familiar one to anyone with the capacity to feel feelings, especially to those who exercise a little too much patience in dealing with day to day bullshit. You bottle up your frustrations as life bears down on you, pushing them further and further within yourself until you’ve reached the point of no return. You then expel all of that tension through your vocal chords at the risk of developing some nasty nodules, but regardless. there’s no mistaking just how therapeutic it can be.
“Scream” follows that trajectory musically. It starts with a sort of simmering, foreboding instrumentation that signals an eruption is on the horizon. The song’s cyclical guitar playing, combined with front person Jess Rosa’s intense and methodically haphazard vocal delivery, has the effect of developing the inner turmoil that proceeds a shrill shriek. Ultimately, that’s unleashed in dramatic fashion in the song’s concluding moments, but not before a delightfully chaotic set up. Here, overlaid vocals overlap and compete for space in a way that mirrors the inner workings of the mind when you’re about to snap.
The band also shared a video for the track, which you can watch below.
