Jeanines - “Don’t Wait For A Sign”
The songwriting duo of Alicia Hyman and Jed Smith, who perform as Jeanines, are definite masters of twee indie pop pastiche, but they’re much more than just a C86 imitation, and their new batch of songs is additional proof of that. Though their excellent self-titled 2019 Slumberland Records debut married heaps of guitar jangle with melancholic lyrics and minor-key vocals melodies, the songs on their forthcoming sophomore effort, Don’t Wait For A Sign, are a bit darker thematically, and the title track shows some flickers of this shift while still maintaining a somewhat sunny disposition.
“Don’t Wait For A Sign,” in a way, is representative of the album's cover, which pictures a barren tree in a dark, abstractly painted field. The bare-bones, clean-sounding guitar tones are the song’s prominent feature and they pair nicely with Hyman’s cheery and calming vocals, which lyrically, focus on assuaging anxiety. In typical Jeanines’ fashion, the tune is short and to the point, packing in some delightful harmonics and sweet melodies into just under a minute and a half.
