LAPÊCHE - "Slight"
LAPêCHE aren’t ones to mince words. We’ve raved about their distinct 90s-influenced post-hardcore sound, tight-as-hell live shows, and ability to stand out from a crowded field of musical peers, but in heaping all of this well-deserved praise on the Brooklyn quartet, we sometimes overlook just how powerful their messaging can be. In addition to all of the above and then some, they’re also quite adept at striking the right balance with their words. Frontperson Krista Diem’s poetic lyrics are sharp, yet malleable enough to leave room for interpretation. And that’s exactly what they achieve on their latest single, “Slight.”
Diem’s words are filled with contradictions in the opening verse, as she immediately qualifies the very first line “resist nothing” with “except for everything.” That kind of oscillating wordplay sets the tone for the balance of the song, which is a meditation on living in anticipation of an uncertain future, and a desire to shift gears to focus on the present. The lines seem to swing back and forth with somewhat cryptic messaging, “wander in wonder, never here / react without pause / dull skill, dry will / circumstance absolves all sin.” Striving to be less reactionary is something we can all, well, strive for… so, draw strength from these wise words as you will.
As we’ve come to expect with LAPêCHE, “Slight” is full of lots of ear wormy sound nuggets that make it an addictive listen. The opening riff, which makes repeated appearances throughout, will definitely garner repeat listens. Dave Diem’s muscular bass, a key characteristic of their sound, makes its mark all over this song, slowly peeking through that aforementioned riff and playing a prominent role in the verses.
