Spud Cannon - “You Got It All (NOT)”
“You Got It All (NOT)” is the third single from Spud Cannon’s forthcoming third album, Good Kids Make Bad Apples, and it just may be my favorite song of 2021 thus far. I can’t quit it! Since I’m so fond of the tune, it was the obvious choice for this week’s Song of the Week!
Spud Cannon nabbed Song of The Week honors just last month for “Juno,” and as I mentioned in the write up, this five-piece is no stranger to writing catchy tunes. Songs like “Runaway Stray” and “February” from their 2018 album Squeeze bounced around in my head for days on end, but “You Got It All (Not)” really sees the band reaching new songwriting heights and establishing themselves as a legit veteran act that’s getting better and better with each release. The chorus is particularly sharp and sing along inducing, while the guitars have just the right amount of jangle. Of course, it’s energetic, like the large majority of the songs in their growing catalog, so it’s sure to give you a much needed Monday morning boost.
The band also shared a fun video for the song, which was shot on a squash court at their alma mater Vassar College. They also snuck in there under the cover of darkness to record all of the songs Good Kids Make Bad Apples, which begs the question - would this record sound as good as it does if it was recorded on a racquetball court? I’m glad we don’t have to find out. Squash was definitely the right choice.
Good Kids Make Bad Apples is out on June 25th via Good Eye Records. You can pre-order a copy on limited edition Bad Apple Red vinyl via Bandcamp. You can also stream “You Got It All (NOT)” on your platform of choice! Keep up with the band by following them on Instagram and liking them on Facebook.
