Miserable Chillers - "Saga's Sword"
You already know that I’m quite fond of Miserable Chillers! Their recent single, “The Glass,” swept me off my feet with its atmospheric instrumentation and nostalgic lyrics. So, I’m thrilled that the Brooklyn-based project just released a full album of tunes to indulge in. Their new record, Audience of Summer, dropped on Friday, and the first track, “Saga’s Sword,” is one of the standout tunes thanks to its enveloping sound and lyrics that attempt to process changes in the natural world.
“Saga’s Sword” is a perfect album opener. It’s immediately engaging and bright sounding with sweeping guitar riffs, colorful percussion, and crystalline synthesizers. These sounds, combined with the lyrics, really give the song a mythical quality, as Miguel Gallego ponders the construction of the universe in the early verses before more explicitly describing a young girl exploring the shallow water of a lake. Gallego drew inspiration from the true story of a Swedish girl who found a 1,500-year-old sword in a lake - a chance occurrence made possible due to the climate-induced decrease in water levels. The glowing and dense sonics of the song tie in nicely with its themes of change and how the climate crisis has permanently altered the natural world.
Stream “Saga’s Sword” and all of the songs on Audience Summer on your platform of choice. Audience of Summer is also available on limited edition cassette via Baby Blue Records. You can purchase it via Bandcamp.
Dont miss this Saturday’s edition of Local Fidelity, as Miguel will be joining me for an interview. Tune in this Saturday, August 15th at 2 pm on Radio Free Brooklyn!
