Ryan Laetari - "I Don't Need You"

Ryan Laetari pleasantly surprised us last Friday with the release of another great song, “I Don’t Need You.”  I’ve been enamored with his lo-fi psych-pop tunes since I first heard some choice cuts from his 2019 album, Big Boy. So, it’s immediate listening for me whenever he shares something new. He already has a great EP, Sunshine Unlimited, to his name this year, and “I Don’t Need You” nicely supplements those five bright and melodic tracks.

“I Don’t Need You” maintains a similar sun-soaked vibe, but sees Laetari being more direct and confrontational with his words.  The ringing, jangly guitars beam through a steady drum machine beat, as Laetari gives stern notice that he doesn’t “need you anymore.”  His matter-of-fact delivery projects the confidence, and relief, that comes with getting over someone - be it a romantic partner or a close friend. It’s the realization of that newly actualized inner strength that drives the song, as once Laetari harnesses it, he cuts ties and lets the synths and guitars reverberate off into the abyss.

Stream “I Don’t Need You” above and check out Ryan on Bandcamp.
