Climates - "Doves"
Climates are a new band, but they’re anything but green. The Brooklyn-based project, which features Theadora Curtis on bass/vocals, Natalie Lew on rhythm guitar, Keira Zhou on drums, and Molly Schoen on lead guitar, only formed eight months ago, but they’ve wasted no time getting themselves out there. The talented four-piece seemed to be playing gigs all the time before life ground to a halt last month, so there’s a good chance you caught their polished live show at any number of local spots. And after sharing their first single, “Super 8,” in February, the band followed it up last week with another great track, “Doves.”
Climates coined the term “glitter-grunge” to describe their sound, and “Doves” perfectly exemplifies the delicate balance they strike between elements of dark and light. On “Doves,” the guitars traverse from crisp to menacing, meshing with spacey harmonies and a robust rhythm section for a style that’s both bold and raw. The song’s honeyed melody is driven by Curtis’ dreamy vocals, and sharply contrasts with its darker lyrical content, which is marked by chilling lines like, “I’ve got a feeling that they’re coming for blood.” Fans of bands like The Breeders and Pixies, who straddle a similar line, will find much to enjoy, as Climates has a knack for writing well-crafted alternative pop songs with an unmistakable edge.
