Jaguar Sun - "With You"
Look At My Records! is excited to premiere the video for “With You,” the brand new single from Jaguar Sun. Chris Minielly, the Toronto-based artist behind the project, has been on a bit of a hot streak recently, sharing track after track of expansive and ear wormy-sounding dreamscapes. His previous two singles, “One Day” and “Midnight Man” were notable for their absolutely intoxicating blend of guitars and synths, while still placing a sharp focus on crafting vivid lyrical portraits of loss and nostalgia to accompany these instrumental mosaics.
“With You” is another excellent example of how Minielly is able to place equal importance on his messaging and compositions. On “With You,” he skillfully weaves the storytelling-driven themes of folk music with the more muscular instrumental sonics of shoegaze and dream pop, soundtracking his ruminations on looking back into the past in order to move forward with ambitious musical accents. The coalescence of synths, rhythm guitar, and lead swirl gorgeously throughout, separating at strategic moments to allow more emphasis on Minielly’s words. Because of this, his lyrics do not fade into the ether and instead pierce through the track’s sonic atmosphere quite clearly, especially when sharing some serious words to live by with respect to the futility of dwelling on the past: “Don’t look back. They said that didn’t pay. I guess we can dwell on our thoughts from yesterday. I’ll hold your hands if you hold mine close, too. We’ll make it on our own. Yeah, I’ll make it with you.”
The accompanying video centers on Minielly, as he sits on a stool playing his guitar. He’s surrounded by an array of psychedelic projections, which morph from trippy colors to videos of brisk moving road-side scenery. The combination perfectly captures the reflective nature of the song.
