The Cordial Sins - "Dog Days"
The Cordials Sins return today with their first new music in three years, a shimmering, yet gritty reflection on change called “Dog Days.” The Columbus-based duo of Liz Fisher and Corey Dickerson are skilled at channeling real feelings into their music, and emotion seems to have a real hand in every layer and moment, even the little ones. Look no further than “Dog Days” as a prime example of their precise methodology.
There’s a sense of anticipation that permeates through the surface at the beginning of “Dog Days.” That ominous tone of uncertainty, which is driven by a thudding and deep bassline, reflects what lead vocalist Liz Fisher describes as moments of intense isolation in the midst of social upheaval. Musically, it perfectly fits the theme of what’s on the horizon lyrically. Fisher’s vocals kick in after about 15 seconds, and she proclaims “change is coming ahead. Dog Days of summer are behind us.” Just like that, the song enters its next act, leaving the sparser introduction in the rearview mirror by shuffling in a menacing combination of guitars, fiercer drumming, and pulsating low ends. Fisher and Dickerson tear down their wall of sound for an epic climax of eerie “ohhs,” but re-erect it for the song’s final moments, where Fisher softly repeats t“change is coming. Dog days of summer are behind us.”
