Vanderwoolf - "Panic"
“Panic,” the brand new track from New York City’s Vanderwoolf, will scare you straight right from the very first note. The band immediately sets a dark and eerie tone with a thudding bassline and some chilling rhythmic low ends, but the mood isn’t quite all gothy doom and gloom as the song progresses. Instead, Vanderwoolf displays a mastery of mixing both dark and light, as the song oscillates between ominous and apocalyptic sounding verses and more energetic, booming choruses. Frontperson Ashlyn Kersten truly has a voice that commands attention and definitely will keep you on your toes, morphing from deep and verdant to intense and piercing when the moment requires. The band’s sound on “Panic” is like a holy (or maybe unholy) union of The Damned and The Stooges. It’s gritty, gripping, and transcendent, packing a range of emotion and firepower into a mere three minutes and change.
Though they sound quite seasoned, Vanderwoolf is a relatively new entity on the New York City scene. In addition to Kersten, who is a former classical singer, on lead vocals and guitar, the band features Dave Marschione on bass, Max Yassky on drums, and new addition Beau Croxton (Damn Jackals) on lead guitar. As a trio, the band released their first single, “Vows,” in April of 2020, and followed that up with another stellar tune called “Shake Rattle” this past June.
