Janelane - "Celebrity Crush"

Celebrity crushes, we’ve all had them. Whether it’s a boy band heartthrob, a fresh-faced movie hunk, or the cute girl next door type from your favorite sitcom, a beautiful famous person has likely been the object of your affection at one point or another. On her latest single as Janelane, Los Angeles songwriter Sophie Negrini delivers an evocative ripper that bluntly tackles the forever unrequited nature of celebrity crushes. We’re super excited to premiere the track today on Look At My Records! 

Like her previous singles, “14 Days” and “Flowers From Athens,” “Celebrity Crush” is another sugary, guitar-driven tune, but this one definitely packs way more of a punch. It’s an uptempo stomper complete with a massive, in-your-face power-pop guitar solo, plenty of gooey harmonies, and a bevy of addictive melodic hooks. It’s a sad song, but with some serious energy and attitude - the infectious kind that’ll make you want to shout along. Negrini’s words land quite strongly, as she reckons with the unique reality of a celebrity crush, which can feel quite powerful and real, but can also bleed over into fantasy. She sums it up pretty well with the anchoring lines of the chorus: “My celebrity crush will never feel the same. My celebrity crush will never know my name,” and she ventures into the kind of satisfying daydreaming that comes with this kind of infatuation, imagining how great it would be to show up at one of her crush’s gigs, where he then spots her and ultimately “sees what he’s been missing in the second row.”
