André Salvador and the Von Kings - "Something Nice"
We’re excited to premiere the video for “Something Nice” by André Salvador & The Von Kings. The song is the third single from the project’s self-titled 2020 release, which dropped last August on Last Night From Glasgow. The joyful, upbeat tune has a vintage psych-pop feel that makes excellent use of a ringing 12-string guitar, several bouncy analog synths, and gooey harmonies that ooze with pure bliss. It’s a modern, fuller-sounding take on the British Invasion rock and roll popularized by Herman’s Hermits, The Zombies, and the Dave Clark Five. The vocals beam with the same type of sunny disposition heard on many of those groups tunes, too, as Tim Cheplick, the man behind the project, described writing the lyrics “in the immediate moments after hearing some good news,” while he was in “a different mindset.”
The video centers on the written word, both handwritten and typeface. It primarily cuts between shots of an unidentified person writing postcards and of Cheplik typing the song’s lyrics on a typewriter in real-time, with a few shots of a red toy car speeding by a stack of vinyl records and some of Cheplik passed out at his desk scattered throughout. The postcards featured in the video were written by Cheplik and his girlfriend as part of a mailing campaign for the Sunrise Movement, a grassroots climate action organization.
