A Very Special Episode - "New Coke"
Spooky season may be in the rearview mirror, but Brooklyn’s A Very Special Episode are looking to revive it with a bit of winter flavor in their haunting new video for “New Coke,” one of the standout tracks from their new record, Fix Your Hearts or Die. Brace yourself, because this video will surely give you goosebumps.
As a song, “New Coke” is chilling, starting out with a sinister drum fill that clears the air for front person Kasey Heisler to seize control. Her vocals are isolated in the opening seconds, as she sings “I can’t smell the summer anymore,” with slivers of guitar and drums kicking in at the conclusion of each line. The song billows in intensity slowly, but once it reaches critical mass, the trio opens the floodgates to unleash a barrage of screeching guitars, Heisler’s towering vocals, and heavy drums.
The video, which was shot way back in the before times of February 2020, has the makings of a horror flick. It opens with shots of a flickering fire in a desolate snow-covered field, before transitioning to a somewhat frantic scene that finds guitarist Patrick Porter and drummer Chayse Schutter driving to a cabin in a remote, rural area. In the video, “New Coke” kicks in at the minute and 20-second mark and things go dark, laying the groundwork for the hair-raising shit that’s about to go down. Heisler winds up wielding a knife and some supernatural stuff starts to happen. Check it out below to see what I’m talking about! The video was directed, shot, and edited by Jeffrey Star.
