Weep Wave - "Soft Demands"
Last we heard from Seattle’s Weep Wave, they were operating as a formidable power trio. About a year later, the band, which is led by songwriter Dylan Fuentes is back with a new, expanded lineup that includes Coy Griffin on guitar, Miles Hubbard on drums, and Mitch Midkiff on bass. Now as a confident-sounding four-piece, the band is sharing their first offering in this new phase, a track described as a “classic break up song” called “Soft Demands.” We’re excited to premiere it today on Look At My Records!
“Soft Demands” has a charming lo-fi aesthetic to it that immediately reminds me of some of the clearer sounding gems in the catalog of Ohio DIY recording legends Times New Viking. The addition of a dedicated guitar player has allowed the band to place more of an emphasis on synthesizers in their saturated sound, which comes to life from the very beginning through their sly interaction with the track’s fried guitars. This lovely, washed-out instrumentation is paired with some straightforward, cutting lyrics, which definitely dig deep in their matter-of-fact nature. Fuentes shared a little bit about the track, including his change in lyric writing approach, via e-mail:
Usually, I tend to hide the meaning of a song in dense metaphors or imagery. When we were writing this song, the lyrics just flowed out of me in a naked kind of way. I feel that these are the most honest and exposed lyrics I have put into a Weep Wave song so far. The cover art is a picture I took about ten years ago of a dead rat that my cat at the time hunted and left out for me. When we finished the song, I knew the dead rat was the perfect cover to go with the lyrics with lines like “Crawl around in you, you can crawl around in me too” and “like a cornered animal it counted for nothing at all”. The dead rat even by itself perfectly expresses how I’m feeling in the song.
