Today's Children - "Things You Wish"
We’re excited to premiere, “Things You Wish,” the latest single from the Chicago-based project Today’s Children. Coming right in the thick of summer, the song is a modern lo-fi take on classic psychedelic pop, with a shining guitar sound similar to that of The Zombies or The Cyrkle. Newer acts looking to replicate the vintage sound of these staples of the mid to late 1960s usually opt to record to tape in some capacity, but Today’s Children impressively captures this warm sound through some more modern, and very DIY, recording means. Nick Arger, the songwriter behind the project, recorded “Things You Wish” entirely on his iPhone using Garageband, some AUX cords, and a Danelectro Honeytone practice amp.
The song itself is a perfect slice of uber-poppy summertime psych. The track features some warm and ringing twin-guitar interplay with halcyon vocals that hit you like a beam of sunshine. It’s carefully crafted guitar and vocal melodies also benefit from a steady injection of bright and colorful harmonies. The song’s rhythm is also tight and punchy. In another unconventional move, Arger used a Ludwig Pocket Kit, a small drum kit designed for children of the ages 4-10 to achieve the song’s snappy percussion sound. Overall, Arger seems to have discovered an interesting and distinctive recording approach as a means to channel the nostalgic sound of the 1960s.
