Mary Shelley - “Goin’ to the Beach”
Mary Shelley’s got that summer feeling. Well, not the specific, laid-back kind that Jonathan Richman was referencing on that titular 1983 track. Instead, they’re talking about their own heat-induced, season-specific feeling, one that’s a bit more uproarious and rowdy. Their frenetic new track, “Goin’ To The Beach,” instead seems to capture the hustle of schlepping out to a beach within New York City limits. Think hot, sweaty subway, grabbing a condensation-covered six-pack from a bodega, and blaring boom boxes.
Since we last heard from Brooklyn’s Mary Shelley, the trio swelled to a quartet by welcoming guitarist Taylor Yancey into the fold. Her presence adds to “Goin’ To The Beach”’s unique charm. The chaotically and wildly tempoed song definitely has hints of “Rock Lobster” in it, complete with some conversational vocal parts that are reminiscent of the Schneider-Pierson-Wilson dynamic and a direct, narrative-driven lyrical approach. But, as mentioned above, “Going To The Beach,” has an exciting unpredictability to it that’s fueled by its intense rhythmic undertones, fevered, noisy guitars, and overall theatrical delivery. It’s a combination that recalls and blends the art-punk of The Pop Group and the funk-infused beats of the Y Records crowd.
