Broken Baby - "Hand Heat"
Los Angeles’ Broken Baby are known for their ability to rock pretty hard. Hell, their last single was titled “Get the Piss Up,” and if you couldn’t figure it out from the title, it was a pretty hard stomping, in-your-face tune. However, bands are complex entities, so of course, Broken Baby has a softer side, too. The duo of Amber Bollinger and Alex Dezen bare that sweeter side for all to see on their newest single, “Hand Heat,” which dropped earlier this month.
Bollinger takes the reins on this track, and her voice is definitely the driving force. Her honeyed vocal melody softens the edge of the grittier sounding guitars that underlie it, and in the verses, it becomes the focal point. Here, Bollinger’s gentle and velvety voice gets an added sweetener from Dezen’s harmonies, as she recounts those moments of indecisiveness when you’re falling for someone. The choruses are hook-filled and fun, as Bollinger blissfully sings of fleeting moments of affection and how personal touch can enhance a connection: “I got your hand heat / Resting on my chin cheek / Rolling on a hot week / Nada Surf with you.” Like all good love stories, the song ends in dramatic fashion with Bollinger floating a Shakespearean-like proposition: “So if you want to / We can jump off of this roof.”
