Julez and the Rollerz - "In Secure City"
You may not know this, but I can definitely hold my own on a pair of roller skates. Years of youth hockey helped sharpen my skating skills, so when I strapped on a pair of actual four-wheeled roller skates for the first time about a decade ago, I was a force to be reckoned with. All of this seemingly unrelated background information is to say that Julez and the Rollerz originally roped me in thanks to the roller skating reference in their name, but I stuck around once I heard their excellent tunes. The Los Angeles trio’s debut single, “In Secure City,” is nothing short of delightful, combining lyrics that tackle the process of mending a bruised ego with a toe-tapping groove. Beyond the eye-catching and punny title, front person and guitarist Jules Batterman’s guitar playing is light and blues-y in a way that nicely complements her vocal swagger. Her voice commands attention, as she sings with bravado and isn’t afraid to inject a bit of emotion into her words for emphasis. The rolling rhythm section, which sits nicely right below Batterman’s voice and the song’s bouncy melody, makes it quite danceable - or should I say, skateable.
“In Secure City” is the project’s first song as Julez and the Rollerz. Batterman previously performed as a solo act under the moniker Julez, getting her start here in New York City before relocating to Los Angeles last year. Once she settled in on the west coast, Batterman added Rachel David (bass) and Steve Donofrio (drums) to her backing band, and Julez and the Rollerz were born.
