Dentist - "Don't Let Me Catch You"
Asbury Park’s Dentist are at the point in their career where it’s almost a certainty that whatever they put out is going to be good. I came to that realization over the summer after I saw them play at Harsimus Cemetery here in Jersey City. They were in rare form despite not being on stage in six months and treated the audience of concert starved patrons to an incredible performance. Their ability to take the challenging circumstances of the last year in stride rubbed off on everyone in attendance, and their uplifting performance on that August evening embodies the approach they took when writing their forthcoming third full length. In describing it, the band shared that they wanted to create something that “would inspire us and our listeners to hang in there and look forward to better times ahead."
“Don’t Let Me Catch You” is the lead single from the album, and it’s enlivening, but in a slightly different way. Emily Bonnerman’s bright, cheery voice floats above fuzzy guitars and a lurid rhythm section, the latter of which plays a prominent role in the choruses. In typical Dentist fashion, it’s an all-around sweet and punchy sounding track that benefits from just the right amount of edge, from the more scaled-back verses to the heavier choruses. The lyrical focus of the track is downright hair-raising, though, as Bonnerman describes a scorned lover who seeks out revenge. This narrative plays out in a cool video that features several characters from some of their past music videos, which you can stream below.
