Tashaki Miyaki - "Gone"
Tashaki Miyaki bottles up a ton of classic dream-pop vibes into the four minute and twenty-second runtime of their brand new single, “Gone.” Though the band intentionally eschewed more of the defining elements of the genre like heavy reverb and fuzz, the track still feels floaty, big, and free without the overwhelming nature of harshly manipulated guitars. Instead, Tashaki Miyaki thrives on “Gone” thanks to their ability to maintain a steadfast softness and make key sonic maneuvers that still allow them to achieve that dense, dreamy sound. The addition of little twinkles of brass and a gorgeous string section are great examples of this approach, as it allows their taciturn sound to feel massive, even when it hits a more downtempo lull.
The accompanying video, which was shot entirely on 16mm film and directed by vocalist/drummer Paige Stark, has the feel of a vintage piece of French cinema. It follows Sandi Denton as she gracefully dances across several urban landscapes before slowly ascending a long flight of stairs and disappearing in the distance.
