Bands Go Rogue with a New Festival to Uplift Artists in Brooklyn

Did you know that most Brooklyn bands, even the ones who pack our local bars, are struggling? The pandemic, rising rents, and exorbitant costs of living have put Brooklyn musicians between a rock and a hard place–in a borough where communities have created and popularized new music for decades. As Brooklyn’s music venues face parallel struggles to stay afloat, Brooklyn musicians face higher room fees they must cover through ticket sales before receiving any earnings themselves. And then there are the fees that musicians must pay in order to apply to participate in music festivals in the City and the U.S.

In October 2022, a small group of women, all local independent musicians, decided there has to be a better way. With the power of Brooklyn’s community, why not bring musicians and venues together to collaborate? Enter Rogue Music Festival: a new model for the music business that reimagines live music as equitable and affordable. By fairly distributing earnings from tickets among musicians and venues, the festival aims to give musicians the compensation they deserve while supporting the venues who work hard to provide a platform for live music.

In its first-ever year, the Rogue Music Festival will bring roughly forty local bands to three of Brooklyn’s premiere venues for three days and nights of celebration.

On the weekend of July 7, 8, and 9, a powerful display of performances will take place at Baby’s All Right, The Sultan aRoom, and 3 Dollar Bill. DJs will spin in the late hours and local vendors will set up in the outdoor spaces. Live t-shirt screen-printing by the local small business Classy Screens will ensure zero waste and a memorable, unique experience. There will also be a collaboration with the family-operated mezcal distillery Rosaluna. The diverse community of bands and artists participating in the festival represent genres including rock, R&B, alternative pop, experimental music and more. A majority of the bands are led by femme-identifying musicians, and an even larger majority of the artists identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The festival has no headliners; bands with all levels of exposure will come together to support one another. Among the artists are genre-bending vocalist Synead, the crowd-surfing punks Television Overdose (TVOD), the alt-pop singer and social media star MegaGoneFree, angular post-punks Foyer Red, Brooklyn veteran Blak Emoji, and the nearly two-decades-and-counting rocker Titus Andronicus, who will perform a solo electric set.

All participating venues have agreed to a fair distribution of the ticket sales earned by the festival. Seventy percent of the earnings from tickets on each day will be divided evenly among the bands who play on that day. Advanced tickets cost $20 per day and tickets at the door will be available for a sliding scale of $20-25. With eleven to fourteen bands performing on each day, the $20 ticket price purposefully challenges the usual festival’s high prices.

In the aftermath of the pandemic, Rogue Music Festival is making a statement: that Brooklyn’s musicians and venues are in this fight together. The resilience of Brooklyn's community and the gratitude it fosters can enable the building of a stronger and more sustainable future.
