Turtle Blues Shares New Album "Midnight Rambling"
Last week, the Los Angeles-based Turtle Blues shared their sophomore full-length, Midnight Rambling. It’s the second album in as many years for songwriter Bianca Espinoza, following her stunning 2020 debut, Find Me Again.
Espinoza maintains a similar aching sentimentality on Midnight Rambling and her songs definitely strike a nice balance between intimate and vast. The songs find themselves nestled somewhere between the emotive sparseness of The Softies and the more spacious indie-folk of Big Thief, with songs like “So Cold” and the intimate “Midnight Rambling” representing the former, while tracks like City feature the kind of gorgeous, fleshed-out instrumentation of the latter. There’s also a bit of country twang that bleeds over into more surf-pop territory on “Western Skies” and “… River,” where the wandering guitar licks of bands like La Luz definitely come to life. It’s a nice, refreshing, definitely California-sounding listen that’ll have you picturing the winding roads of Laurel Canyon.
